Diplômé de Georgetown, il débute dans Sex and the City (1999) et se fait remarquer dans Alias (2001-2006). Son rôle dans Very Bad Trip (2009) le propulse au rang de star. Il excelle dans des films comme Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Sniper (2014) et A Star Is Born (2018), qu’il réalise et joue aux côtés de Lady Gaga.
