Well, that was an odd and confusing experience. This dystopian surrealist horror is definitely unique and it offers quite a few striking images. However, it's not very engaging at times and almost incomprehensible. I'm fine with films with nonsensical narratives as long as the imagery evoke some emotions that make it hard to look away. With this film, some of the imagery comes across as forced. That's too bad because it starts off great but I find the rest doesn't quite measure up. It walks a very thin line between a unique surreal experimental film and weird for the sake of being weird. Also, there are some scenes in the second half that go on for just a few moments too long and ruin the whole scene. At least the ending's great and I'm glad I managed to finish this.
[MUBI] Louis Malle considered it his most intimate film. A feminist nightmare with a vocation for sexual awakening. Luis Buñuel's daughter-in-law writing dialogues. Gay icon Joe Dallesandro as an object of desire. A rarity that separates two stages of the director's filmography. A nightmare from which the audience also wants to wake up.
