An engrossing, expansive, and incredibly well made film. It has it’s issues but for the most part it’s a very worthy sequel.
John Krasinski has proven to have a decent level of craftsmanship behind the camera but this movie proves that he should be kept away from screenwriting. I’m really surprised at a lot of the positive reviews because the plotting and beats in this movie are super dumb. There is a small hint at the level we are working at when we are with Krasinski on “Day 1” where we get a small peek at life before the aliens came and they make a choice to drop in an Easter egg reference to the toy spaceship that gets his child killed from the first one. It’s a seemingly innocuous little call back, foreshadow, wink, knudge, whatever, but it is a perfect example of the types of choices made in this movie. I mean not to ruin anything but essentially an alien pilots a boat in this film. Overall it just bugged me.
Both films are fantastic but second definitely scores higher than the first with more action, better camera work and affects were so much better and definitely was more noisier than the first and loved the ending and hoping it doesn’t end there because I’d love a 3rd movie, back story on the aliens would be nice but wouldn’t mind if they still keep it quiet..
The response to this movie makes zero sense to me. Most people liked the first one and they think this one is better, while I thought the first one was mediocre and this one is even worse. They really got away with making the _exact_ same movie again. No glance into an urban city, or more info about the aliens, no explanation why Lee and Evelyn decide to have a replacement baby in a world where you have to be quiet. There was nothing further explored plot or character wise. Just more slow walking through New York, characters acting impulsively and making dumb decisions that constantly put them in danger but that doesn't matter because they got huge amounts of plot armor. They added 'evil' people for no reason. No explanation, at all! Why was the message on the radio some cryptic code? The aliens can't speak English. Scary monster screams very loud, has beyond hypersensitive hearing, and kills people out of shot, and it just takes a 13 year old girl to find out that maybe a high pitched sound could possibly defeat the aliens. The parallel editing was obnoxious. Like, we get it! They don't have to do that for the entire second half of the film. Maybe in the third and fourth movies, that will get green lit, they can cut the closeups of feet or brooding eyes and pull together their fictional universe into a coherent, functioning world.
Okay, worthy sequel, but it still amazes me that they discover things now and no one else has not noticed before
