Wow. That wasn't even mediocre.
Romero fans will get a slither here and there of the great zombie filmmakers work but it is hidden under a horribly acted and low budget film. If you didn’t know the name attached, it would be understandable to think this was some sort of fan film.
Just another zombie movie... nothing different then most... it was an oke movie.
Since I'm not a huge fan of found footage, it's probably no surprise that I don't really connect with George A. Romero's "Diary of the Dead." At least I can get behind the explanation for why all the footage was shot. It makes sense, since film students are at work in the zombie apocalypse. However, the film has massive problems with its execution. Romero obviously lacked the budget to properly realize his ideas, and the acting is mostly subpar, with the monotonous “narrator” being particularly noteworthy. That said, "Diary of the Dead" does have one or two good moments, so it’s not a total failure. Overall, though, it’s unfortunately a pretty boring zombie movie.
I can't tell if this was horrifically bad or just regular old bad, whether the acting was truly awful or if it was bad - on purpose - because these are supposed to be film students and amateurs. There was some really bad and cringy writing, that's for sure. I did enjoy the professor's dreary philosophical musings. But it took me several sittings to get through because except for the professor's manic depressive comments, everything else was pretty rotten.
