A gifted fine arts and photography student experiences an inner void in spite of her achievements. She gains a morbid interest in death after taking photos of a fatal car crash, which progressively impacts her relationships and life. The entire movie appears rather intriguing, but it couldn't really persuade me right away. Jiney tends to appear aloof and hard to understand, whereas her best friend Jas adds a bit more compassion to the narrative. Visually, the film is genuinely stunning at times. The light and darkness are worked hard by the camera, the colors switching between being rich and colorful and icy and distant. The photographs of Jiney are particularly lovely - they are beautifully shot and suit the theme of the film well. Anyone who appreciates a little artistic imagery will thoroughly enjoy a few here. The film starts fairly softly and subdued, more along the lines of psychological drama than classic horror fare. It's a decent amount about Jiney's ghoulish fixation, her inner conflict and how she slowly becomes consumed by this evil fascination. It's a cold, icy, almost-hypnotic tone. And then, to everyone's likely greater surprise, the film suddenly goes completely barreling out of control with
its final 20 minutes, starkly swerving into a nasty, nearly "torture porn"-style trajectory. Instead of muted confrontation of art and death, there is raw violence and terror. It's like a rough cut, forced into another movie.
It's definitely intense, but whether it actually fits into the story or not is questionable. The sudden shift in tone and the way the story unfolds might leave some feeling disconnected. While the visuals and themes are striking, the execution can feel uneven at times. Still, if you’re in the mood for something atmospheric, unsettling, and visually arresting, “Ab-normal Beauty” is definitely worth a watch. Just be prepared for a ride that doesn’t quite stick to one lane.
