The ending of Tourist Trap makes this one so much better. It was so weird seeing Molly drive away with mannequin versions of her friends. So weird. I really want to know how Mr. Slausen made those dolls! HOW WERE THEY ALIVE? DID I MISS IT? Anyway Chuck Connors is great as Mr. Slausen! Really dug him in this one! We also have Midge Pinciotti in this one! I knew I knew Becky from somewhere! After a few lines I recognized her! Tanya Roberts! Mannequins are always scary right? Even here in a gore free film they are creepy. So weird now that I think about it. Not much happens but you are just dying to find out about the mannequins, how are they talking? How do they aim? I still don't know. Chuck Connors can use magic, that must be it! This was the first time I watched something hosted by Joe Bob Briggs and I must say, I really, really enjoyed it. Might be watching all of his Shudder hosted films, not might, I will be! I didn't mind the interruptions because he knows what he's talking about and I liked his humor. That joke at the end killed me. So yeah, if you haven't seen Tourist Trap yet, it certainly worth a watch!
The opening scene with the supernatural mannequin attack was unnerving and very effective. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie doesn't equal those early scares. There are some really good moments though, and if you are scared of mannequins, wax figures, etc., you should get plenty of chills from this. It's not gory to any extent and like almost all Horror movies, people do dumb things. It's frankly pretty overt in this movie. There's a twist about 2/3rds of the way through that really isn't surprising at all. Chuck Connors was an unusual casting as Mr. Slausen and probably contrary to most others, I didn't like him much in the role. It's not socially acceptable to say things like this anymore, but Tanya Roberts and Robin Sherwood were beautiful damsels in distress. I would have liked one of those two as lead actress instead of Jocelyn Jones.
Like a tourist trap: captivating and cheap. It's better than you expected but you expected the worst. Honestly, if they'd stayed with the premise of the first kill where the tourist trap literally trapped and killed a guy, this film would've been at least a 7.
House of Plastic This clearly inspired *House of Wax*, there's so many similarities. Mixed with what could be the origin story of
*Carrie*'s father
. I like the
telekinetic powers to control the mannequins even though it's never explained (are they rogue *X-Men*?)
, gives it a bit of spice and unpredictability. The mannequins are effectively creepy. Apart from that though it's your regular slasher story. A decent one. Apart from one kill, I found them pretty basic and they don't show much. A good score but it's a little too intense and loud at times. Still a fun watch mostly for the out of the ordinary aspects mentionned.
