Apparaissant notamment dans les films Y a-t-il un pilote dans l'avion ? (1980), 48 heures (1982), Gremlins (1984), Le Flic de Beverly Hills (1984) ou encore Flipper (1996). Il tient, entre 1987 et 1990, son premier grand rôle, celui de Frank McPike, dans la série télévisée Un flic dans la mafia.
De 2009 à 2022, il joue le rôle de Mike Ehrmantraut, personnage qui le fait mondialement connaître et qu'il joue dans un premier temps dans la série Breaking Bad (2009-2012), puis dans la série dérivée Better Call Saul (2015-2022).
