Synopsis
Eva et Jan, deux ex-musiciens, mènent une vie modeste sur une île, oublieux des rumeurs d’une guerre qui pour eux existe depuis toujours, au loin. Mais un jour cette guerre arrive à leur porte et ils ne peuvent plus prétendre qu’elle ne les concerne pas…

Shocking picture from Bergman; I had no idea I was sitting down for a full-on war movie, on top of the usual brilliance of more existential themes. There aren't words to describe the experience of watching Liv Ullmann in everything she does, and I think this is my favorite pairing of her with von Sydow that I've seen. Absolutely beautiful and soul-crushing at the same time--April 2025 is a hell of a time to watch this for the first time.
