Synopsis

Shocking picture from Bergman; I had no idea I was sitting down for a full-on war movie, on top of the usual brilliance of more existential themes. There aren't words to describe the experience of watching Liv Ullmann in everything she does, and I think this is my favorite pairing of her with von Sydow that I've seen. Absolutely beautiful and soul-crushing at the same time--April 2025 is a hell of a time to watch this for the first time.
