George Cukor + Cary Grant, + Katharine Hepburn + good script usually give a great movie and in this case it does not fail, very good movie
Cary's fantatstic in his role, and the entire supporting cast is stellar. Only Kate misses her mark by over-acting. I don't know if that was Cukor's fault, or if she was just being stubborn. Overall, though, well worth seeing, even if it is very clearly a first run at The Philadelphia Story.
Beautiful b/w, Hepburn, Grant, exemplary mid-Atlantic accent, fantastic dialogues with all this old vocab, an opulent set (the mansion is a studio I assume - it's still great), 30's style and manners, an entertaining story. More of a social drama than a comedy I guess. If it were for me, it could be a lot more screwball-y but it's still a very nice picture. PS: Caligula became mad and cruel and was murdered by his own guards.
