it's not perfect, but it's good.

This has been a really great year for films so far, at least for me anyway, but god has it been a weird one. I mean it feels like a constant cycle that the films I am most hyped about have been the disappointing ones, yet the films I didn’t care so much for have been the best. Supergirl is another film that I was so bloody excited for, and sadly didn’t live up to my expectations. The story just wasn’t doing it for me, and it did feel like a copy of Guardians for the most part. That said, it still had some pretty cool moments and it’s probably better than some of my other anticipated films of the year, like Scream 7 and Scary Movie 6. (god I hate saying that because I wanted all three of these to be my favourites of the year) There was just a lot of unnecessary changes in this film which never needed to be changed in the first place, like how they changed up the lore of Krypton. Look, I get that they were trying something different, but I’m not sure how I feel about a part of Krypton surviving after its destruction. I mean Clark is literally known as the last son of Krypton, not a freaking piece of it. I didn’t like how Kara is born 7 years after its collapse either when technically she’s older than Clark. I’m really sorry for my little rant, I never wanted to write anything bad about this movie, but I feel like some of the decisions here were a little silly. Anyway, onto the positive as even though I did have issues with this film, I still liked it, and it’s not a bad movie by any means. Obviously, SuperGirl was a huge standout and I liked the direction they went for her by making her more rebellious. Milley Alcock was great in this role, who I’ve been a fan of since she was in House of The Dragon. I liked the chemistry between her and Ruthye a lot as well, and I didn’t mind Ruthye either to be honest. Krypto was of course as adorable as ever, and him as a puppy was the cuteest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. My only gripe is I wish we saw him more because he was hardly in it. The exact same goes for Lobo too, who I wish we saw a lot more because he stole every single scene he was in. Jason Momoa finally got the role he was born to play, and he was.. Cool. As. Fuck. A true badass if I’ve ever seen one. I liked a lot of the weird creature designs too, I thought they were pretty hilarious as some did look insanely strange. Seth Rogen even played one of them, and I can’t safely say he was my favourite character in this. He was so cute, and it’s rare to say that about any Seth Rogen character. Overall I liked this movie, but damm I really wanted it to be one of my favourites of the year, which unfortunately it isn’t. I do think without the silly decisions, and if the story was a bit better, this definitely could’ve been one of my favourites as I still liked a lot about it. I think I’ll give Supergirl a 7.8 out of 10 for now, which really sucks because it should be a bloody 10. 7.8/10

What a complete NOTHING of a movie. I'm sorry, I've been rooting for Gunn's DCU since day one, and I really loved Superman (2025), but this is NOT a good sign. First of all, this fails horrendously as an adaptation of the original book, so much of the nuance and poignancy is totally lost with the changes they make, both to the narrative and Kara's character. Second, this script just feels unfinished. The dialogue is so trite, the conflicts don't mean anything, and the action scenes are so shallow. The editing in this film is also shockingly terrible, I could not figure out what was happening in half of these fight scenes. The cast is fine, I think Alcock and Momoa are good choices and I hope to seem them again, and David Corenswet IS my Superman, he nails it in every scene he's given. The needle drops, oh no the needle drops. Clearly trying to replicate the Gunn style without a hint of any of his substance, this film is chocked full of misplaced pop music accompanying totally weightless action scenes. Seriously, that final action scene featuring that cover of The Middle is just laughable, what were they thinking. This film wants to be everything Guardians of the Galaxy was without understanding why that story and those characters work. This film's utter failure at the box office, hopefully, should send a message to DC that they need to do better. The goodwill accrued through 2025's Superman isn't enough to get audiences to sit through mediocrity (also, maybe don't release your second film in between Toy Story 5 AND Minions and Monsters, they really should have given this like a September release). I still have hope for Clayface and Man of Tomorrow, but a misfire this big occurring this early and with a character being set up to be this major is a horrible sign of things to come.

Oh, wow, this was actually...good?! Usually, my taste often resonates with journalists and reviewers, but not this time. Had a lot of fun with this one. Some quick thoughts: - Never thought there would be the day where I get to hear songs of Wolf Alice AND fkn Hana Vu in a major blockbuster. Can't dislike the film just because of this. - Milly Alcock was so, so cool. - Loved the [spoiler] silent scream in space scene. That one was so well made and acted. You could really feel her emotions in that moment [/spoiler] - Some scenes and topics were pretty hard (?!). This film is actually quite mature in a lot of ways but the PG-13 rating made it look a little weird in some moments. But I fully get why they couldn't push for a R-Rating with this one. Man, I wish this gets at least some more clout. Way better than most of the super hero films that came out over the last years.
