Handlung

I have fond memories of watching this animated "Star Trek" show when I was a kid via satellite dish on Sky Channel. It prepared me for the live action version and when I rewatch these episodes now it is easy to see why I liked it. The series used the same voice cast as in the original series. It had many of the same writers who delivered some interesting stories and even delivered a good background story on Spock. What was not that great was that the animation was pretty static and repetitive at times and that there was not enough character moments to give the show a true depth. It was sadly also disowned by the creator and a long time was not available to see, but luckily it is now possible to see it again. It is not a masterpiece but it gives fans what they want: additional adventures with their favorite crew and it do feel and look like the original show without overdoing it which is nice.

Star Trek: The Animated Series is one of the more curious entries in the sprawling Star Trek franchise. Airing just a few years after The Original Series was canceled, it serves as both a continuation and a bridge between the original adventures and the eventual revival with The Motion Picture. For die-hard fans, it’s an interesting footnote in Starfleet history—a show that dared to boldly go where Saturday morning cartoons typically didn’t. Produced by Filmation and featuring much of the original cast returning to voice their characters, the series retained the core spirit of TOS, with Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Scotty, and the rest of the Enterprise crew embarking on new missions. At just 22 minutes per episode, the show keeps a brisk pace and often leans heavily on big science fiction concepts rather than elaborate character work. The animation is stiff and limited—clearly a product of its time and budget—but it’s the storytelling that still occasionally shines. One of the show’s advantages is that it wasn’t bound by live-action constraints. It introduced new alien species, surreal planetary environments, and weird sci-fi phenomena that would have been impossible to render convincingly on a 1960s TV set. There’s even a cat-like alien crewmember, M’Ress, and a multi-limbed navigator named Arex—concepts that wouldn’t have worked with prosthetics or costuming back then. Still, the show doesn’t always hold up. The pacing can be clunky, the voice acting (despite the original cast) is often flat, and the visuals are extremely limited—even for early '70s animation. It’s more interesting than it is engaging, more nostalgic than exciting. For completists and longtime fans, The Animated Series is a charming relic that added some valuable ideas to the Trek universe. But for casual viewers, it's easily skippable. I give Star Trek: The Animated Series a respectful but dated 6/10.

Star Trek: The Animated Series, from '73, is kinda cool. It keeps that classic Star Trek vibe, but it's not perfect. I'd give it a 6 out of 10. The stories are pretty imaginative. They do some crazy stuff that would've been impossible to film back then. You see wild alien worlds and creatures, which is awesome. The writing is generally good, and they stick to those classic Star Trek themes of exploring and making the right choices. But the animation is a bit rough around the edges. It feels kinda stiff and repetitive sometimes. Not exactly the mind-blowing visuals you'd expect from Star Trek. The voice acting is okay, but it's not always as exciting as the original series. It's great to hear Shatner and Nimoy again, but they don't always sound as passionate. Overall, it's a decent watch for die-hard Trekkies. You can see how they expanded the universe, and it's a piece of Star Trek history. But if you're not a huge fan, you might find it a bit dated and underwhelming compared to the newer stuff.
