International bekannt wurde er durch die Rolle des Hikaru Sulu in der Star-Trek-Fernsehserie Raumschiff Enterprise und den nachfolgenden Kinofilmen. Der homosexuelle japanische Amerikaner setzt sich insbesondere für die LGBT/LSBTTIQ-Bewegung ein, ist aber auch für seinen Antirassismus bekannt.
