this film romanticizes the south and this battle way too much the American civil war was a tragedy and was brutal way too many emotional speeches the effects aren't very good and the confederates weren't heroes they were traitors and 620,000 men died in the civil war it shouldn't be romanticized it should be remembered the way it actually happened the south stood for slavery and oppression
“A very good movie for those interested in American history. It features extensive and accurate depictions of battle scenes and historical details. The film evokes a range of emotions and portrays a certain depth that is quite challenging to capture on the big screen. However, it’s a bit of a shame that F. Maxwell and the team started with this in the early ’90s and then produced ‘Gods and Generals’ ten years later, providing an alternative view of the war. It feels a bit backward to begin with the final phase of the war and then produce a different perspective on it. Regardless, in my opinion, it is a highly watchable film. I give it a 9 out of 10 and highly recommend it.”
I try and watch it around the anniversary, July 1-3.
Based on the award winning novel _The Killer Angels_ by Michael Shaara, _Gettysburg_ is a powerful and compelling film about the bloodiest battle of the America Civil War. As with the novel, the focus centers on the Union and Confederate officers; which are used rather effectively to articulate the reasons for the war and the duties that they felt to their country/state, or causes, to lead them to break bonds of family and friendship to side with the Union or Confederacy. Martin Sheen, Tom Berenger, Stephen Lang, Richard Jordan, and Jeff Daniels lead the cast and deliver strong performances. However, most of the soldiers are played by Civil War re-enactors and it shows (though they do help the film capture the scope of the battles and lend an overall authenticity). And while the fighting is exciting and full of explosions, there’s not really that much blood and gore (likely to avoid an R rating). Yet despite its problems, _Gettysburg_ does an extraordinary job at capturing this monumental battle and the men who fought it.
Good epic movie about one of the most iconic battles in American history.
