“One of the better films related to the American Civil War. I have seen the film on three occasions, and each time I am equally amazed by how visually stunning and weighty it presents the Confederate Army and prominent military figures. Pickett and Robert E. Lee are particularly intriguing in the film, with Robert Duvall delivering a standout performance. However, it is the portrayal of Stonewall Jackson that truly elevates the entire film. From a historical perspective, it is incredibly captivating and well-executed. However, there are a few aspects worth mentioning that lower my rating: • It is overly lengthy. 3 hours and 39 minutes could have been condensed to a maximum of 2 hours plus a few minutes. • The film received direct funding from conservative Christian sources. • This is clearly reflected in the dialogue, which aims to highlight Christian fanaticism. • The storytelling is overly one-sided, focusing predominantly on the innocent Confederate soldiers. Nevertheless, overall, it remains an exceptionally well-crafted film. I highly recommend it, particularly for those seeking visually grand cinematic experiences.”
A prequel to _Gettysburg_, _Gods and Generals_ is a compelling character drama about the generals of the American Civil War. Focusing on Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the film follows them as they must choice sides when states start seceding from the Union and face each other in battle. Several of the _Gettysburg_ actors return, including Jeff Daniels and Stephen Land (though this time as “Stonewall” Jackson), and are joined by Robert Duvall as Robert E. Lee. The performances are pretty good and do an impressive job at humanizing these historical figures. And except for a few weak CGI scenes, the battles are exciting and convey the horrors of war. However, the plot meanders at times and it’s not always clear where the battles are and why they’re being fought. Yet while it has some problems, overall _Gods and Generals_ is a powerful film.
I was hoping Lloyd Christmas would make an appearance.
