This movie is an unexpected gem, and I can't think of a movie that is quite like it. The movie very much has an indie feel, but the quality of the acting (particularly the lead, the brother, and the mother) and the production really makes it feel like something more. The premise is pretty simple: a girl goes home with her boyfriend for the holidays, but things quickly go south. That is the easy part, of course. What comes next is the difficult part: character development and plot progression. The weird thing is that at no point does anything necessarily stand out, and the film kind of sneaks up on you. I think that a lot of the reason for this is that - because of the title - the movie is free to explore less-travelled roads. I was pleasantly surprised at how the movie built unexpected depth, especially with the lead's brother. In so many other movies he would have served no greater purpose that simple-minded comic relief. And finally, the film has a fabulous soundtrack that provided punch in all of the right moments.
