Back in the 90s I only watched half of the film and glad to of watched the full film because it was great with plenty of action and with a strong plot and Rebecca De Mornay played her revenge villain role great! It reminds of her character In the film Mother’s Day. XD
At first I was a bit skeptic due to some very early, cheesy acting/lines. But I was surprisingly on the edge of my seat the whole time. I felt as a thriller it went above and beyond in the story line to keep audiences constantly guessing what the main characters will do next. I'm very glad I watched this film, I even got my sister who hates movies like this to be glued to the television!
Peyton, to a 6 year old bully: *"I got a message for you, Roth! Leave Emma alone! Look at me - if you don't, I'm gonna rip your fucking head off!"* Really good 90s psychological thriller that I found engaging from beginning to end. The initial setup is perfect for a thriller, you understand why the main character had to do what she had to do after that very uncomfortable gynecologist appointment. On the other hand there's this really twisted character that might be extreme in the way she does revenge but it's kinda earned from her perspective and I get why she's pissed. So I found myself rooting for both at the same time (for a while at least). Solid psycho nanny casting, Rebecca De Mornay is a master of facial expressions here and you can always tell what her intentions are behind the façade. They did a good job at adding layers to her too, I felt bad for her throughout. She's worthy of joining the Iconic Psycho Women Club alongside Glen Close and the queen herself; Kathy Bates. Solomon is the MVP here though, such a good soul and it's disgusting what Peyton did to him I was so mad. Julianne Moore has some really fun moments too, she's rude and hilarious. Thrilling third act and satisfying although predictable ending.
The film hasn't aged much over the past 30 years, it's a bit cliché at times, but it's still watchable.
Watched this after watching the remake first. This version is far superior. Better plot, better acting, better casting. De Mornay's character and portrayal were definitely more diabolical and psychotic. 90s classic with great 80s-90s vibe. Watch this and not the remake!
