Il a interprété James Bond — succédant à Sean Connery et George Lazenby — dans sept opus de la série de films d'EON Productions entre 1973 et 1985. Il est aussi connu pour ses rôles dans des séries télévisées: Ivanhoé dans Ivanhoé (1958-1959), Simon Templar dans Le Saint (1962-1969), et Lord Brett Sinclair, aristocrate dandy, dans Amicalement vôtre (1971-1972).
En hommage à sa carrière cinématographique, il a été anobli par la reine Élisabeth II le 14 juin 2003.
