The director vindicates British cinema of the seventies and eighties, and a need to move away from conventional representations of poverty. Through an extravagant and sensorial relationship, involving smells, tastes and touches, she manages to make the story a rather visceral sample of the ways in which childhood traumas are represented in an adolescence that needs to explore itself.
