30 years old and yet still very relevant. It does not pale to more recent movies in the genre. Sure the image is a bit old, but the work on the shots, the decor, the lights and shadows is stunning, and most scenes are beautiful throughout. The atmosphere is dark and creepy, torrential rain, troglodyte convent, weird nuns, secrets, catacombs, weird processions at torchlight, everything helps, and the soundtrack in on cue too. This all culminates with idols, ancient rituals and Lovecraftian horror. Sure it looks a little old there, but not that much and the plot, pacing and overall high production value make up for it. I may have missed some details on who wants what. Sarah's character is a bit strange to me. On one hand, she's a nun there, that probably spent her life there, how could Elisabeth trust her ? On the other,
given who she really is
, how could the nuns let her be ? And I'm not entirely clear on the nuns. They
kill a lot of people
, but seem to be against
the demon
. Are they a mixed bunch ? Are there two factions, one secretly going the other's goal, some
trying to free the demon while other try to keep it sealed
?
Very cool, very Lovecraftian. It's not seen or talked about much, which is unfortunate, because it's a quality love-letter. Great ending!
Wow... I was not expecting that!
