This is the first time I've seen a show kill it's own hype purposefully...like we were supposed to get 8 episodes in the span of 8 weeks but they ruined it and I don't even feel like watching the rest of the season. It's sad because I loved season 1 and season 2 was okay despite the mediocre cardboard cutout looking ass animation
A sad parody of its former self, putting all their chips into shock value, hype, and meta culture. Sad to see it's already devolving without any self awareness faster than The Boys did. Core aspects of this show (writing, animation, direction, pacing, scope) really plummeted this season. The only consistency was the voice acting and visual design. Not only does it feel like it morphed into hollow content between seasons, whats worse is that it feels like a complete waste of time now.
eight episode seasons with this big of a gap is ROUGH
This season was a huge disappointment in a variety of ways. Before I talk about the season on its own, I need to mention the atrocious decision-making related to the release cycle for this show. I get that, due to the strike, a large gap between season 1 and season 2 was going to exist. However, the show compounded this issue by somehow deciding to split the season into two chunks four months apart, neither of which felt satisfying on its own. This decision dampened my excitement for the show significantly and killed public awareness. It was basically self-sabotage and might hurt their ability to adapt the rest of the comics. And all of this was done completely independently of the quality of the season itself. How does it fare if you were to binge-watch it all in one go right after watching season 1? Well, it feels very transitory. There are some good arcs and nuggets there, and Mark's character arc is definitely well done. The problem is that we get a ton of arcs for additional characters, many of whom end up interrupting the more interesting arcs as well as feeling rushed at the end. The final episode suddenly jumps to random characters to give them a perfunctory solution to a drama that felt very contrived in the first place. The setup seems like it is building to something very promising, but when you couple the lack of satisfying content within this season itself with the strange release cycle, and you have a show that has instantly and dramatically dropped in esteem in my eyes.
