La historia comienza cuando Manta Oyamada, un estudiante de secundaria, toma un atajo por el cementerio local y divisa a un joven misterioso que simplemente observa las estrellas llamado Yoh Asakura, el cual le invita a quedarse con él y sus "amigos", pero Manta huye asustado al ver que estos eran fantasmas. Tiempo después Yoh se revela así mismo como un "chamán" (el vínculo entre este mundo y el de los espíritus) para demostrarle a Manta que entre ellos ha nacido una amistad.

The rating is for the series as a whole. The first part is much more interesting and is the only reason I completed it. The later I got the less logical the shaman power becomes, and [spoiler]the end answers exactly zero story-questions[/spoiler]. So while I do like the characters and their dynamics, the more I watched the less I liked it, and with [spoiler]the ending being more a season cliffhanger than series ending[/spoiler] it kinda lowered the rating even more. _(Now to re-watch Hunter x Hunter to see if the characters are as similar as I remember them... Edit: They are.)_
