2005 Sci-fi-fest reviews: Surface 9*: I really liked this show! Great cast and a good story. Only 15 episodes so it didn’t feel like it was dragging on much. They keep the story tight and moving forward. The season ending was satisfying and it left a lot to the imagination on where a season 2 could go. Invasion 7*: also a decent show with a great cast and a promising story. It was way too long though resulting in whole episodes that veer away from the main story line. I didn’t really feel a sense on where a season 2 would go so the ending was not that satisfying. I think it might have been better to make it a miniseries. Threshold 6*: also a decent show with a great cast and a promising story. I wanted to like this show more but they went the procedural route (solve a problem every week) instead of doing the big story arc. As a result a number of episodes were kind of boring and didn’t lend much to the story. Way too much time spent on the food!
At the beginning, it reminded me of Scorpion - but with Aliens. Although the writing was fairly basic, it was actually a good story. Each episode built a little on the others, adding a new aspect to the story that made it feel like it was growing throughout the series. The central premise of the Threshold protocols was quickly forgotten, and largely irrelevant, but that wasn't really a bad thing. The acting of the main characters varied considerably (and as someone who is yet to watch Game of Thrones, I know realise why one of those actors has become so well respected) Although it was made in 2005, it has aged quite well compared to other alien invasion stories - the only time I wondered was when there was a shot of a Motorola cell phone. Overall, this felt like it was a lot better than other similar series, and was actually a bit of hidden gem. I liked it.
Intriguing concept starts well but some uneven pacing and tonal shifts - you can pick the writers influence - detract slightly from the overall quality of the series. Fans of prematurely cancelled one season sci-fi shows will enjoy it.
