A good Jackie Chan movie. A bad Police Story movie. The fight scene with the ladder is fantastic of course, and so are several of the other action sequences. The story is messy. As a kid who would often rent or buy Jackie Chan movies on VHS, I had no idea this movie was part of the Police Story franchise, as the American marketing gave no indication of it. Watching it again as an adult, well, the movie doesn't give much indication of it either. Just a couple of brief scenes with Bill Tung. Definitely worth watching for the stunts, and it's under 90 minutes!
This is Police Story in name, but not in spirit in my opinion as this movie was actually pretty bad and messy from a story point of view. But Jackie Chan (Insp. Chan) is still really good in this film and though it is the worst in the franchise, it has one of the best fight sequences in it and some truly great stunts in it. I'd say skip it, but if you love watch Jackie Chan do some amazing stunts then definitely check it out and if you are not a Jackie fan then definitely skip it. Unfortunately, I could only find a dubbed version of this but Jackie does the dubbing for himself which means it was actually watchable.
"Do you think he went crazy on this assignment? Maybe he's overworked." That fight scene in the warehouse were Jackie Chan uses those ladders is still one of my favorite scenes from Jackie Chan. It was one of the first things I saw from him when I wanted to see more from the legend himself. I youtubed his action scenes and this one lives rent-free in my head since the first moment I saw it. Epic stuff. Anyway Police Story 4: First Strike is not a Police Story movie at all. I think they put in Uncle Bill to make it look a bit like a Police Story movie and sell more tickets maybe? But I think in the 90s the name Jackie Chan on top of the bill should've been enough. But without it really continuing inside the Police Story world this is still a banger of an action movie. You get your funny moments, amazing stunts, balcony scenes, sharks, a underwater fight and a Koala. I had a blast revisiting this one and nothing will top the original but seeing Jackie Chan on a snowboard going off a cliff and hanging onto a helicopter afterwards got to be one of the most dangerous stuff he has done in his legendary career. A sight to behold.
Jackie goes to Russia … and more. As usual, simplistic, often nonsensical story … but that is not why the movie is still good. Jackie Chan delivers as always his very special humour and before all his real life crazy stunts. A must for fans of the man. As always too, the English doubling is between bad and awful, unfortunately.
