This is a beautiful film with a lovely story that I fell in love with the first time I watched it. It's spectacular and very well done. I would be surprised if one were to watch it and not shed a tear. The message and story is so lovely and the journey Billy goes on is similar to one that I'm sure many people have shared. This is one of the only films that has ever given me butterflies in my stomach both during and after watching it, it's incredible, and I was able to connect with Billy's character.
The movie that makes you cry with a kid dancing ballet. Billy is a kid from an English mining town in the 80s who discovers his thing isn't boxing, but ballet. And of course, in a working-class environment with machismo and miners' strikes, that's not well-seen (and still wouldn't be in many places today...). But Billy has talent and a teacher who believes in him.
The evolution of the father, going from not understanding to sacrificing everything so his son has the chance to get into the Royal Ballet School, is one of the most beautiful things in cinema. And that final leap when we see him as an adult on stage... big tears.
Jamie Bell is incredible for being a kid. It's one of those movies that leave you with a mix of sadness and hope. The British social context of the Thatcher era gives it a lot of depth. A classic everyone should watch.
Uplifting story of a boy succeeding in his his dreams against all odds.
Keep wanting to compare this to the Commitments and it doesn't stack up. I liked it but not floored by it.
How is this rated a 7? It's a modern classic!
