I was excited for this one, and I wanted to love it, but it just didn't work for me. Thomasin is great, but it just felt... lacking.
I don't know the source material but judging by the fact that both the novel and screenplay where written by Otessa Moshfegh, who is also listed as a producer, I guess the movie is pretty much whatever the creative vision was. I liked the first two thirds and also the twist, but the ending just didn't click with me. I also really enjoyed how authentic 60s the movie felt. The looks, the aspect ratio, grain, etc. Great camera work overall.
it's an artsy film. If you don't mind that, you'll enjoy this film. That is, until the end. it just ends. it's like they ran out of funding and couldn't complete it. That's the feeling "the ending" gives off. So, if you're alright with the ending being extremely unsatisfying, give it a watch. if not, skip it..
