Put it on blindly thinking it was a murder mystery staring a small town sheriff. It's not that. It's a "good" movie for sure but not very enjoyable to watch. To be expected I suppose from a film about abuse and alcoholism. Plays slow and grim as a frozen corpse but had me in stitches a few times. Similar to a Cohen Brothers movie but more somber and without their trademark giddiness. Wades character was written as a bit too much of an idiot for my taste. Had he been a pinch smarter it would have made the story more compelling to me. Could never stand that Sissy lady. Does she do it on purpose? If I were a real movie critic I would probably give it an 8 but I'm not so it gets a 6... Oh and it's the same director that did Cat People, Taxi Driver etc... he seems to have made some of the best and worst reviewed movies of all time. I'm going to try and work up the courage to watch some of his other films...
The nuances in the screenplay and the acting (Nolte and Coburn Oscar nominees for their performances) along with the superb directing and filmography make for some palpable world building. Love the soundtrack as well.
Wow! Nolte and Coburn are mesmerizing...
A Nick Nolte's violent reaction.
The movie was too long and total waste of time.
