As with any good sports drama, this is about more than the sport itself. Monique isn't only wrestling her way to victory on the mat, but she is also wrestling with her difficult family relationships, looking to secure victory for her father's approval. Needless to say, she is going to get knocked down, literally and metaphorically. An intense and sad film, but not without hope.
