While performance and directing from H.Berry were great, what really captured my heart and feelings was the little boy and his drama. Probably one of the saddest performances of this year. Danny Boyd was amazing in a average but ok movie.
Not a bad movie but it is predictable and overlong. Berry deserves credit for what she has delivered here but that delivery, sadly, isn't a knockout blow.
Halle Berry was awesome and she did a great job at directing it too. Only big problem for me was the grandma storyline:
she went from leaving the kid with the mom but he was sitting in the pouring rain in flip flops and she said the mom needs to clean up her mess with the kid and leaves. Yet later in the movie she becomes the dotting grandma saying he was found at 11 pm outside a theatre (not in the rain) and that she will take care of him now.... There was a non-existent progression for this character and it did not fit into the story very well.
Storyline was similar to other movies in this category, but overall I liked this take on the genre.
I found this film too one-note to be super engaging. even though it has a lot of great elements and beautiful performances. It's very sad and quiet and just needed more variety. The fight scene is fantastic though, super well choreographed and shot. I also appreciated a fight film featuring women in which their gender in their sport wasn't a main plot point. I wouldn't watch again but I enjoyed it well enough once.
I hated every character in this movie.
