Madaari is worth watching for Irrfan Khan. Now that he is not among us, such movies remind us of his ability time and again. He had much less to work with as the plot and other characters don't measure up. We had seen Wednesday in 2008. 8 years after, you would expect something much more but the film fails to deliver. The home minister's son is kidnapped and the whole system goes on war footing to find him. The primary driver here is the home mister. The value of the post. It is not because the home minister has a lot of power so he can command every three-letter agency to solve this, but it raises the question that in a sovereign nation like India if the home minister's son is not safe, can others keep respect for the institutions? Nachiket (Jimmy Shergill) raises this question which had the power to create a detour in the theme of the movie. It could have become bigger than the cop drama that it eventually becomes. There are some time reversals which try to jumpstart the interest in the film but since there is very little suspense for many parts of the film, it only works for a moment. It is impressive that we don't have a love angle here. This keeps the focus on the story. Like Akshay Kumar's recent films, we don't go on a boring long flashback where he first meets a girl. That's welcoming. Overall, recommended if you are nostalgic and want to see Irrfan Khan again, not otherwise.
