Bela Lugosi scares up some terror in _The Return of the Vampire_. When a German bombing during World War II frees a vampire that had been staked, he resumes his attacks on a British family that he had been stalking in 1918. The script is rather weak, as it begins at the end of the first series of attacks with a young woman already having been bitten and the doctor concluding that a vampire is responsible; and it never explains who the vampire is really and why he’s attacking this family. And the World War II setting provides an odd juxtaposition between mystical horrors and real-world horrors. Still, nobody plays a vampire better than Lugosi, and the film does some interesting things with a werewolf character that’s the vampire’s servant. _The Return of the Vampire_ is a bit of a mess, but it still managers some frightening thrills.
