So very average. If you are a fan of Tracy Morgan, which I'm not really (small doses), it may sit better than it did with me. Kevin Smith's prints are barely on this as a director and it feels like exactly what it is; a film Bruce Willis hoped Smith would make better than it was on paper. Willis phoned Smith after Live Free or Die Hard and said we have to do a film and Smith had nothing. It's a vehicle for Morgan and takes the place of Jersey Girl as the albatross around Smiths neck. The film barely made it's money back domestically and rightly so.
Buddy cop comedies can either be a hit or a complete disaster, and Cop Out falls somewhere in between. The movie follows the classic formula of two mismatched cops forced to work together, but the script lacks spark, and the jokes rarely land. Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan try to carry the film with their charisma, but their lack of chemistry and a weak storyline make everything feel forced and aimless. The biggest issue is that it fails to balance comedy and action. Some jokes work, but most are predictable or simply fall flat. The action scenes don't stand out either, often feeling shoehorned in. Kevin Smith, who usually excels at irreverent comedy, struggles to give the film the rhythm it needs, resulting in a string of gags that rarely hit the mark. In the end, Cop Out isn’t a total disaster, but it doesn’t have anything memorable either. There are a few entertaining moments, but overall, it’s a forgettable entry in the genre.
I feel bad about the things I said about Bruce Willis after this came out knowing now that he hasn't just been "phoning it in". That said, this is still one of the worst films I've ever seen.
Only good thing about this movie is Seann William Scott... It looked like more of a series than a movie
Kevin Smith goes mainstream and produces one of the worst films of his career in Cop Out. While on suspension NYPD detective Jimmy Monroe’s collector’s baseball card is stolen, forcing him to go outside the law in order to get it back. Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, and Seann William Scott lead the cast and give bad performances all. The comedy all falls flat and the characters are one-dimensional stereotypes. Whether it’s Kevin Smith’s inept directing or the abysmal writing, nothing works in Cop Out.
