Forever a cult classic.
Throws a lot of shit at the wall- at one point literally. Not all of it sticks, but enough does for it to be worth the watch. Affleck and Damon are the biggest highlights here, and I often was left wishing the film was more of them. Not that the rest of the cast was bad- Rock is casted to type and it works. Rickman was excellent, of course, elevating his material. Lee’s a good villain with just enough depth. And when Florentino gets to act alongside them she nails it, especially off of Rickman and in her train scene with Affleck. But uh. I figured Jay and Silent Bob would be in this as like, a cameo. Not a major role. Maybe that hits more if this isn’t your first Smith, like me, but their schtick felt aged and out of place. It’s a lot of fun and interesting ideas, and it doesn’t all coalesce, but enough does to charm. The ambition is part of that charm, but if it dialed it back to excise the duo and give more screentime to the angels it could’ve been great.
I love "Dogma." That may be largely due to nostalgia; I watched the movie many times in the early 2000s. But the humor still works great for me today. At the same time, I also like that Kevin Smith has evolved a bit as a director here. His religious commentary isn't exactly subtle, but it goes deeper than almost anything in his previous films. At the same time, the cast delivers in "Dogma." Jay and Silent Bob are always a highlight anyway, and here they get more screen time than ever before. Otherwise, Alan Rickman is great, as is the dream duo of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Even though "Dogma" is certainly not a masterpiece cinematically, it remains one of my personal favorites. In any case, it's Smith's film from the '90s that has aged best. Clearly, a maturation process had begun with him by that point.
I would stop to being an atheist for Alanis, but my true goddess is Salma
