A playful and entertaining body horror that tackles diet culture with plenty of camp and darkly ridiculous energy. This film follows almost the exact same thematic territory as Saccharine, which also came out this year. Both films explore body image, weight loss, addiction, and the dangerous lengths people will go to in order to feel desirable. While I think Saccharine handles those ideas with more emotional depth and stronger execution, this one takes a much more playful and openly campy approach. The concept feels especially relevant in this ozempic era. A miracle treatment promising the perfect body but carrying increasingly horrifying consequences is already a great setup for body horror, and the film has a lot of fun pushing that idea into something gross, strange, and completely chaotic. The twin actresses playing the before and after versions of the main character also do a solid job. They make the character’s transformation feel more emotionally believable than I expected, especially when the story begins exploring the split between who she was and who she desperately wants to become. This is clearly a low-budget production, and not everything lands perfectly. Some of the writing and effects can feel rough, but the film never takes itself too seriously, which makes its limitations much easier to forgive. It understands that the appeal lies in the bizarre transformation, nasty body horror, and increasingly unhinged consequences.
