An attempt to make money by kidnapping the boss's daughter doesn't go well right away. What can you do when your partners are practically clinical idiots? However, you'd hardly expect that an enraged father and his henchmen aren't the most terrifying threat in the remote English countryside. A dark, funny, and shamelessly realistic tale.

What a fun and unexpected little surprise! I've had The Cottage on my watchlist for a while, but I never really knew what to expect. And just like with so many other movies, that turned out to be the best way to watch it. So, double spoiler warning! [spoiler]What started as a weird little thriller suddenly turned into a full-on splatterfest! No wonder this movie keeps getting mentioned—it’s just pure fun! The blend of subtle humor and slapstick fits perfectly with the film’s shift in genre. One moment you’re laughing, the next you’re screaming, and then at some point, you’re probably doing both at the same time. Add to that some seriously great characters and a soundtrack that’s absolutely on point. [/spoiler] The score for The Cottage was composed by Laura Rossi, and honestly, it does so much heavy lifting in this film. Rossi expertly balances the shifts in mood—her music keeps the tension tight in the early scenes, but seamlessly adapts as the film veers into its more absurd and gory moments. There are hints of classic horror scoring, with eerie string sections that build suspense, but the way it leans into playful, almost mischievous cues during the comedic beats is where it really shines. It’s the kind of soundtrack that knows exactly when to lean in and when to step back, letting the absurdity speak for itself. If anything, the music makes the movie even funnier by enhancing the ridiculousness of the situation. [spoiler]I was also really surprised by how bloody the movie gets. But honestly, it just works. Going from 0 to 100 like that has a real impact—macabre, mean-spirited, and yet absolutely hilarious. It’s not easy to mix horror and comedy in a way that doesn’t feel either too goofy or too trashy, but The Cottage absolutely nails it. [/spoiler] For me, it now belongs on the same list as Severance (2006), Shaun of the Dead (2004), and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) (which, by the way, got a Korean remake called Handsome Guys (2024)—highly recommend checking that out!). Nothing groundbreaking, nothing revolutionary, but everything just works together so perfectly. I had a great time with this one, and I bet you will have too!

I may add in spoiler tags with this one but I don't feel anything I've said is really a spoiler. I just don't want to possibly ruin anything for others. Better safe than sorry. This has a lot of actors in it that I really like, however, it was a hot mess. It's intended to be a mixed-genre - comedy/horror - piece but it fell flat on both parts. I thought the first half started off well enough but once the whole bit with the woods starts it just loses focus. If you're going to make a mixed-genre film then you need to maintain that mix throughout. [spoiler] This felt like the first half was setting us up for a dark British comedy and the second half was just some random slasher flick. I also felt like the last half went rather quickly and not in a good way. It felt like all these rough and tumble, although incredibly stupid, characters we met in the first half suddenly changed into helpless teenage camp counselors. [/spoiler] Overall it wasn't the worst waste of a few hours I've ever watched. I don't think I would recommend it but if you like the genre then have at it.
