I'm not sure why but Nicolas Roeg's latter day films tend to look more amateur than his early ones. Given the complexity of editing in Don't Look Now (1973) and Bad Timing (1980). But the editing on this and Heart of Darkness (1993) seem very rushed. Scenes aren't allowed enough breathing space and you get the feeling a lot of the film has been left on the cutting room floor. That doesn't stop both from being good films though. This is a very dialogue driven film about love/jealousy/sexual obsession/power. And it's intriguing stuff. I watched it in horrible quality so I couldn't hear all of the dialogue. But it was pretty gripping anyway. Of course it isn't on a par with his first five or so films but Roeg's downfall is a little overstated. He was still capable of making good films later in his career.
