I discovered this on the terrestrial channel Get TV. It's as uninteresting as a TV movie can be. If Tom Selleck could shave his head & his face to play Eisenhower & expand his acting range it didn't work, although when it comes to playing world leaders & warriors he did fulfill that general niche; he'd play a cop in "Blue Bloods" later. But I must assume the producers had "Saving Private Ryan" on their minds. That's the film that sets a certain standard in World War II cinema & "Ike: Countdown to D-Day," again...a TV movie, falls way short.
Underrated film with strong acting and a very well‑drawn tone, especially in the way the senior command is portrayed around the D‑Day planning. What really stood out to me was the interplay between Eisenhower and Churchill, and the way the script uses Leigh‑Mallory’s later “historical excuse” to highlight his class, contrasted with the arrogance of General Montgomery: a commander with major successes to his name, but achieved at the cost of many unnecessary deaths (something history too often glosses over).
I think this is a gem. Just watch the new movie, pressure, which more or less tells the same story. This is much better and seleck is much better at playing ike than Brendan Fraser in my opinion.
