Truly an 80's hangover. There are certainly some scenes that captivate me, but overall it is not a compelling film. It is damning that it has the advantage of being able to play religious undertones to further the plot, and squanders that advantage. The pacing is that of a snail's, the performances are for the most part plastic, and the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired. Because of all of that, the special effects at the tail end of the film are not charming, they're horrible and terribly dated. I mean for goodness sake, the obnoxious sax in the ending scene... it's just too much. To say it's cliché is an understatement; this film was released in 1991, not 1985... Having read the book, I had high hopes for this film. Another lesson, teaching me that I should have 0 expectations for adaptations.
