Synopsis
Value Shop assistant manager Maya Vargas wants only one thing for her 43rd birthday -- a promotion. While her résumé may not scream upper management, her track record certainly does; she is an innovator who listens to her customers and delivers results. When she loses the job to a college-educated candidate, Maya sets out to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as book smarts -- and it's never too late for a second act.

An interesting twist on a love story. A great cast. An improbable scenario with a predictable ending common to the genre. Good light viewing. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10. [Dramedy]

Wow. Unexpectedly, this movie turns out to have one of the biggest twists in 2019 so far. The way this was marketed, I was expecting the kind of traditional comedy we haven't really seen a lot of since the 90's. While there is some of that influence, a significant portion of the movie is straight up drama, with long stretches devoid of any meaningful sense of comedy. Still - my mismatched expectations aside - the movie mostly worked. I enjoyed the comedic aspects, and actually did end up feeling somewhat investment in the dramatic aspects. Seven out of ten feels exactly right for this movie - it was pretty good. Nothing more, nothing less.
