Finally got around to seeing this one albeit 20 years after it's release. Holy crap I'm sorry I missed it. Really, really enjoyed it. Not perfect but a solid monster flick.
Deep Rising is my kind of film but somehow I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I wasn't in the mood, maybe something struck me wrong I don't know. It however has a fun monster! Loads of corpses, skeletons, sucked-dry people, cringe-worthy lines, Famke Janssen, Wes Studi, Djimon Hounsou, an action packed final 15 minutes, many assholes and an open end. Was there suppose to be a sequel? I don't know but I liked the ending though! Anyway Deep Rising is a 90's B-film that just didn't click with me. I do think that if you haven't seen it yet, it could be worth a watch.
A fun sci-fi/action romp that never takes itself seriously. I’ve watched it several times over the years and it always entertains.
A "super yacht" (come on, just call it a cruise ship...) full of rich people gets hit by a sea creature or creatures. Pirates/hijackers board the ship, discover whats left of the crew and passengers too late, and must escape. Meh. Completely forgettable but had some hilariously bad moments. A weird mix of Poseidon Adventure and Tremors without the sense of adventure or interesting creature discovery you get from either of those movies. I think they wanted the monster to be Lovecraftian, but got water graboids instead. We had fun watching and making fun of it. Given when this was made (1998), the CGI was horrible. Made for TV bad. Not sure if this was intentional or not, but there were several times that characters made weird but subtle Star Wars (Episode IV) references, which no other character acknowledged. It felt like the scriptwriter got a bunch of lines past their editor as a joke / Easter egg of sorts...
Essentially similar to “Aliens”, just on a cruise ship and with sea monsters … and less good in all respects: Story, acting, special effects, cinematography, … But I recognise that that is a high hurdle for any movie. Nonetheless, this one has some serious issues with logic and realism, thus making it a better B-movie despite some good cast members. In the end, it is OK for fans of the genre, but do not expect too much.
