A film directed by Liv Ullman in the style of Ingmar Bergman, who had retired from filmmaking, but who manages to capture the intimacy of a personal story related to his own relationships. The male perspective does not prevent the complexity of the female character, especially thanks to Lena Endre, within a story that questions some conventions in marriages, but above all is very hard on the characters and the consequences of their actions. Two and a half hours of a story that speaks of infidelity, but above all of characters tormented by jealousy and desire.
I thought that this was a subtle and worthwhile little drama. I particularly enjoyed the angle where we see the film (loosely) through the writer's eyes. I don't know if the movie would have worked as well without the nuanced performance of the female lead - she is very, very good. follow me at https://IHATEBadMovies.com or facebook IHATEBadMovies
