Diane Lane was incredibly deserving of her Academy Award nomination. Outstanding!
The affair is the only good part of the movie. Watch and delight in the many ways he takes her panties off. Everything else is pointless. The husband goes to the man's home to confront him for sleeping with his wife and says, "May I come in?" The guy says, "Sure, let me get you a drink." He doesn't even ask if the husband brought a gun or was going to beat him to death. The husband didn't even have a reason for why he came. He just wanted to walk around the man's apartment, and touch all his stuff. I started to think they were going to become buddies and keep their relationship a secret from the wife. That would have actually made a better movie than what happened! And really, we never even know why she went to see the man and start the affair. Why now, why him? Was it his sexy French accent, or his hair? But, Richard Gere is attractive too.
Diane Lane did justice to her character as she played the unfaithful wife meticulously. Richard Gere and Oliver Martinez, both had a charming personality on screen, the former as a loving husband and the latter as a paramour. The soundtrack and the visual style reminds you of a dreamy rainy day and to look into the mind of a cheating partner with such a setting was mesmerizing. You could experience the fun Martel was having with Connie, especially in the erotic sequences, and the descent of Connie into guilt each time. So, depending on the perspective of the character you viewed the movie with, this was well-crafted. The same goes with Edward's character, you could feel the sadness of this guy as his wife kept on getting distant from him.
Watch it for Diane Lane's performance, anyway, and then write your own ending -- because Director Adrian Lyne didn't give us one. Lane is terrific in her only Oscar-nominated role. She sets a high bar for her portrayal of a woman suddenly caught in a bind after giving in to her sexual urges. There are a lot of roles like this, but few actresses have given so much depth and humanity to the character.
Yes they are resistant crystals with snow.
