What about a genius like Fellini. This director is incredible and never gets one wrong (not surprisingly, he is my favorite). Giulietta degli spiriti turns out to be a stupendous film, an incredible journey between reality and madness, with some horror undertones toward the finale. Wonderful cinematography, perfect acting for this kind of film, wonderful soundtrack. Some parts may be a bit slower, but it is 2h10m that passes while watching a film that visually is stunning. 8.5/10

Watching Fellini in chronological order, this seems to be a significant departure point from his past work. Not just in color, but also in terms of feeling completely off the rails in excess and general craziness. 8 1/2 had elements of this, but Juliet turns it up to 11. I think I prefer his earlier work, as this all felt a little too garish for me. Even some of Masina's magic seems to have worn off--part of it is the character, but she trudges through the movie with a dourness that made me miss her younger performances.
