Heather Graham and Joseph Fiennes star in the erotic psychological thriller Killing Me Softly. Based on a bestselling novel, a woman has a chance encounter with a mountain climber that leads to a passionate affair, but before long she starts to receive mysterious letters warning her that her lover is not the man that she thinks he is. Graham and Fiennes have no chemistry together, which is detrimental to the film. And the script does a rather poor job at developing the mystery and suspense; so much so that the twists and reveals have no impact. Still, there’s some intrigue to the story, and a few tense moments here and there. A poorly made film, Killing Me Softly is ineffectual and formulaic.
Although it's been only twelve years since this movie was shot it feels like much more. But I’m not sure it looked any better on its time. It seems ridiculous and surreal even for a Hollywood film. It feels like some mixture of an erotic dream of a frustrated nerdy girl and a cheap horror movie with a “surprising” twist just before the end. 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. And honestly it earns that. Two capable actors with zero chemistry between them, trying to sell a passionate obsession that never once feels real. The thriller angle is laughably predictable and the dialogue makes you wince more than once. What's genuinely baffling is that the director had made masterpieces before this. You'd never guess from a single frame here. Watch it and forget it. Or just skip it.
Soft porn that comes out of a little girly wet dreams and a man’s wildest hopes. A bimbo who just needs a “What’s your name” as foreplay and then you can do with her whatever you want for as long as you want. For the rest, the story is forgettable, predictable and frankly idiotic. In today’s day and age of Internet, you can easily find better porn without having to endure the idiotic story and with just as much unrealistic characters and bad acting.
