Shit happens when you try to copy Mr Lanthimos. Pretentious, unfathomable and annoying.
I really don't know what to make of this movie. Halfway though I figured it is maybe less of the weird wave thingy it gives impression to be and better watched a free form art flick like the experimental dance - which made sense for a while. But then it gave up on both of them and kept meandering in a socially uncomfortable valley and wrapped up with, idk... a pretentious film student piece? Maybe it makes sense after the director's next movie what he was going for, because this feels like it is attempting to encompass way too much and ends up inconsistent and messy. Or rather, maybe the director gets the experience to pick and choose what to leave out, because there are multiple directions with potential but keeping all of them in makes a mess. Kill your darlings and all that.
A family with already pretty weird relationship dynamics gets even weirder with the presence of a stranger in their vacation home. It's a bit of an home invasion situation, though she is officially invited to stay, where she is clearly weird, enigmatic, and with an hidden agenda. Good point: it doesn't take the very easy and expected path, of tormented couple issues and nobody sleeps with her (
though maybe the daughter ?
). However it tries a bit too hard to be weird, to the point it is really not natural. Most conversations are not dialogues but exchanges of rhetorical or weird questions with no answers. Isabel acts weird all the time, ok there is her difficult job and disconnection from normal life, but that really does not justify most of her behaviour, starting by her extreme insistence that Kitti stays and how she suddenly decides she must go. She also doesn't seem to mind her weird attitude towards their underage daughter. Similarly, the weird dance scenes in the middle could have been avoided, really not my thing and I really don't see what they bring here. Less strange but pretty much useless too, the scenes at the beach with the weirdos. In the end, turns out Kitti is actually simply
Death
. Why not. That's a good idea and it fits some of her previous behaviour. Makes you kinda wonder whether it takes that much work and time each time, why Vito "knew her", and whether Isabel actually
killed him by telling her to go
.
