What a bizarre film. The premise is good, though the numbers are laughable compared to today's baseball contracts. $40 million dollars. That's it!? Gil struck me as an odd person, but his descent escalated too much for my understanding of the character. He did seem to be well connected and resourceful. He found all the phone numbers, the club the players hang out at, the hotels they stay, their houses, and could continue to afford tickets to the Giants games after losing his job. The last act had some interesting reveals, some interesting shots, but forced you to suspend disbelief a little too much. For example,
how did he step in as the home umpire? Was it for the entire game? If so, I think there are limited numbers of umpires in the league and they should all have a level of familiarity with each other and umpires do confer between innings. If it was in the middle of the game, then where is the umpire now? Also, it was a lot of rain. Like, an insane amount of rain for the fans to be sitting in the stands still.
Still a fair movie. Not as great as I once thought.
I’m probably being generous with my rating but it has a good cast and I like baseball. Still get a kick out of the Coop reveal of them being little league teammates. Otherwise, this movie is pretty far from realistic. Kept thinking about how is he able to get locker room phone numbers, know all the player hangouts, finding their homes ect.
Alright movie. Reminds me of something De Niro would have done earlier in his career. Gets the point across well.
Hugely underrated movie! Always on my save list :ok_hand_tone1:
The Fan is a fun, stylish thriller that delivers solid entertainment despite following a lot of familiar territory. While the narrative walks down a well-worn path of psychological obsession, director Tony Scott infuses the film with his signature visual flair and kinetic energy. The tension builds steadily, but the crescendo isn't quite as thrilling as it needs to be to make a truly lasting impact.
