Be careful how close you get to the stars.
I love Woody Allen. If you're a fan, like I am, you're going to love the dialog, and the acting. Once the film begins, it doesn't let up, it just goes! The trouble, for me, was the ending; it just kind of stops. Now, I know if I rewatched this, I'd like it even more, but it doesn't hit with the automatic power of an _Annie Hall_(1977) or _Manhattan_ (1979). Like so many Allen movies, this one is about a troubled relationship, and the aftermath of its collapse. We follow Lee, and Robin, first together, then apart. The choice to shoot this in black and white does add a touch of classic-cinema charm. Overall, another great movie from Woody. Not nearly my favorite, but very familiar, and that's why I like him so much: he consistently made/makes movies that are poignant while also being funny. Very much a mild recommend to any fans of his work.
I may have given this a higher rating than it deserved. It was not unlike some of Woody Allen's other films where a lot of the meanings come together in the last 10 or 15 minutes. In a nutshell the movie is a study on how celebrity affects people, from how they get it to how they are treated by others. Each would-be celebrity is relative to another would-be celebrity and at different parts of the movie the characters are at different points in the celebrity universe. Stardust Memories was a much better attempt at these theme.
Judy Davis and Joe Montegna's characters were THE most annoying characters I have ever come across. I understand they're supposed to be awkward and a bit naggy but it made the film absolutely unbearable to watch. I only watched the film for Leonardo and he was in it for about ten minutes (the only ten minutes worth watching) On to the plot/storyline... Or lack of it... I don't see the point in this at all? What's the moral of the story? Where's the character development, where's the emotion? I felt nothing but annoyance and boredom throughout the entire film, what an absolute waste of time. Also, Donald Trump is in this???
