Part rural relationship drama, part social thriller - I was impressed with how naturally the tension builds in this film, bubbling over almost without notice. The two leads do a particularly excellent job of capturing the push-pull between them, both with regard to their relationship and in how they deal with an escalating conflict among the workers hired to help harvest their inherited cork plantation.

There is a certain obsession recently with portraying the emptied Spain as an unknown and even dangerous place, but it works better when it adopts the thriller texture than when it tries to offer an overly conventional social message. The problem with this movie is that it sounds old-fashioned, that it doesn't really add anything new to a set of stories that offer a similar perspective. It is also harmed by that forced naturalness of some actors who are too loose.
