I'm still not sure if there was actually anything frightening happening in this film or if I was just watching two isolated co-workers get supremely sick of each other. There's talk of "something" these researchers are attempting to identify, but it's never given much real life beyond some imagery that could simply be visual red herrings. Despite all this, I was at least engaged with our two characters' descent into distrusting madness.

Deserves a re-watch, but for my first viewing I'd quickly describe the premise as 'Annihilation'-lite. But instead of an alien presence, its supernatural forces of a cult. Or something like that. Wait, what did I just watch? Both actors give solid performances, and it is refreshing to see a Black man scientist role.

I've recently rewatched the movie after reading Laird Barron's latest collection of stories: "Not A Speck of Light", who's stories were the basis for the movie. it struck me how well the movies captures the underlying paranoia and latent dread of his story even if little happens. His stories and this movies feels like being stalked by a predator deep in the woods, with the feeling that the predator in question might be human but also something else.

one of those horror movies with a presence of a placebo danger..... which at the end of the day I don't get.
