SPOILERS AHEAD!!! if anyone could possibly care. It's horrible, I love it. It's an utterly blatant rip-off of King Kong, the acting is awful, the guy in the suit doesn’t even act like a monkey, he just walks weird for some reason and that’s it. The special effects are, just like the rest of the movie, terrible. And while you’re watching it, while you’re thinking “Clearly not even the people who made this movie took it seriously,” then the ending comes, and you realize that yes, the people behind it really believed they were creating something deep and emotional with this film—and once again, you can’t help but love it. The professor’s death is totally anticlimactic, I burst out laughing when it happened. The whole pacing of the final sequence with Konga in the city is just bizarre, there are moments that feel like they’re straight out of a Scary Movie film, with a rhythm that comes off as blatantly comedic. When the army starts arriving, the camera cuts to Konga looking dumbfounded, then to a couple of cars pulling up and soldiers getting out, then back to Konga, then to more cars and soldiers arriving, back to Konga… and it just keeps going like that for at least 3 minutes straight, with increasingly absurd cars showing up on screen. It’s just incredible… And even with all of this, even being one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my life, it’s also one of the most fun and enjoyable films I’ve had the pleasure of watching. This movie, some friends, and drinks can probably make for one of the best Saturday night plans (as a sidenote, drinking every time someone leaves a door open in the movie may end with people in an alcohol-induced coma). A terrible film, and a lifelong must-watch.
Great gorilla suit eye work.
An artistic reimagining of the story behind the discovery of human growth hormone.
